Wow, just when you thought you had seen it all, along comes Ted Unkel to take the quality of MLS refereeing further into the abyss. We all like to complain about refs from time to time, or a little more regularly in my case when I highlight some of the worst whistlers in the league, but Teddy set a new level that I don’t think Baldomero Toledo, Fotis Bazakos or even Sorin Stoica can reach. The bar is now so low that even a malnourished caterpillar wouldn’t fit under it!

But dont take my word for it … ask Michael Bradley !!!

TFC started brightly when Jackson got on the end of an Oduro pass in the 16th minute to slot home but then it started getting surreal. TFC should have had a free-kick when Collin hauled down Gilberto. The guy with the whistle must have seen Gilberto’s scoring record as that can be the only excuse for not carding Collin, and red carding him for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity at that ….

To fan the flames a little, Unkel Ted then went on a booking rampage for the rest of the first half, but only if you were wearing red! Oduro, Henry, Jackson and Morrow all booked before half-time with Doneil’s booking ruling him out of the next match. But as much as we want to rightly scorn referee Unkel, lets not let TFC off the hook that easy. Some sloppy defending and some poor finishing – along with the woodwork a couple of times – were just as culpable in this loss as the ref, but it has to be said that he excelled at his mediocrity far better than anyone else on the pitch on the day. Into the second half and it was Graham Zusi who got KC back on track just 3 minutes in. A goalmouth scramble and some missed clearances saw him curl the ball into an open net. Oduro was having what may have been his best game for TFC so far and tormenting Sinovic down the flanks. Several times he was hauled down questionably but each time nothing from good old Unkel Ted. Well not until the 75th minute when Oduro was felled once again and this time it was Besler who hauled him down. Having been booked already, he was shown a red and took the long walk. TFC though could not capitalise on the one man advantage and it was left to former TFC player Jacob Petersen to grab the winner 10 minutes from time for KC. Another defensive lapse saw a clearance land right at his feet and he slotted home from close range. TFC brought on Osorio and DeRo to try and use skill to win the game but there was no equalizer forthcoming and a bitter defeat was the result. Highlights
